Rocklands, South Africa Bouldering

Despite only only a few years of development, Rocklands in South Africa has been established as a world class bouldering venue and is now a popular choice for boulderers worldwide. Andy Earl gives us the low down...

Rocklands, South Africa

Rocklands is a totally world class venue, with sandstone bouldering for all levels on all sorts of angles.

Located in the Cederberg mountain range, 200km north east of Cape Town, Rocklands probably has the most amazing shaped boulders you will ever see!

It is also great for us Brits as the time difference is only +2 hours, so no jet lag. I can thoroughly recommend and I'll be taking another holiday from Climb Newcastle to go back in 2010.

Let's get straight down to some facts...

Travel: We took a KLM flight from Newcastle to Cape Town, which took 11 hurs and cost around £500 each.

Car hire: Most car rental companies operate out of Cape Town International airport, no worries there.

Accomodation: We used depakhuys.com which has self-catering cottages and a campsite, and is very close to the blocs.

Food: Clanwilliam is the nearest town to the blocs and has a spar supermarket, which sells all that you'll really need. There are also several restaurants and a coffee shop in the town.

Guides: Everything you need is basically on the Rocklands Boulders website.

When to Go: Our summer is South African winter so Rocklands is a great UK summer venue as long as you miss the rainy season.
